Critical Thinking and Decision-Making: Decision-Making Strategies

I am sure you must have probably come across this saying that ’your destiny is in your hands!’. Life in itself is a mystery and you only get to understand it as you live it. You get wiser and wiser and as you do, it is natural to expect that you will respond better to the events in your life. If there is anything you must be careful about is making life time decisions. In my opinion, mistakes are different from decisions. A mistake can be corrected but a decision might not. A mistake is selecting a wrong course for your undergraduate study- that can be change before you start the course. A decision is when you decide to study the course- this will remain with you for the rest of your life and can really determine how the following decades of your life will look like. So what do you have to do before making any decision especially one that it impact can last a lifetime?

Here are my few thoughts

1. Take your time: you need to understand that life decision usually comes with lifetime consequences. Never rush to make any important decisions such as who to marry, the kind of degree to study, career choice, investment choice, health-related choice and many more. Taking your time in this context does not me avoiding the need to make a decision. You buy time to think through things..... This way, your chances of making a better decision will be high.

2. Do your homework: How best can I put this? The more information you have, the better your chances of making a good decision. You will need to question things, consult people who are experienced and experts in the area where you want to make a decision. Doing your own research will help you to gain more awareness that will be useful to making the right decision.

3. Consider how you will handle the consequences that might happen: Sometimes, you will make the right decision and things will still end up turning out in a way you never expected. You cannot control certain factors of life especially the choices of other people. The best you could do is to have your plan on how you will deal with the consequences of your decision if they do happen.

4. Be resilient: Being resilient is important to withstanding life challenges. You must make up your mind to face the storm no matter what. If you do not believe in yourself, no amount of motivation or encouragement can make you push further. Choose to walk your own path but do so by making sure you gather as much awareness as you can. To be successful, you simply have to be deliberate. Thank you and I hope you enjoy my short article.
