VATICAN SAYS COVID19 VACCINE MORALLY ACCEPTABLE

Covid: Vatican says coronavirus vaccines 'morally acceptable' - BBC News

The use of coronavirus vaccines developed using cell lines derived from aborted foetuses is "morally acceptable", the Catholic Church announced on Monday.

In the absence of any alternative, such vaccines "can be used in good conscience", the Vatican said.  The Vatican acknowledged that the issue was a cause of concern for some Catholics but said in a note that “it is morally acceptable to receive Covid-19 vaccines that have used cell lines from aborted foetuses in their research and production process”.

"All vaccinations recognised as clinically safe and effective can be used in good conscience with the certain knowledge that the use of such vaccines does not constitute formal co-operation with the abortion from which the cells used in production of the vaccines derive," the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith announced

The use of such vaccines “does not constitute formal cooperation with the abortion from which the cells used in production of the vaccines derive”, it said. The text, which was approved by Pope Francis, also said there was "a moral imperative" to ensure that poorer countries received access to effective vaccines.

The Vatican added that while vaccination “must be voluntary ... in the absence of other means to stop or even prevent the epidemic, the common good may recommend vaccination, especially to protect the weakest and most exposed”.

Those who refuse to use vaccines “must do their utmost to avoid” spreading infection, it added.
