When you feel persistent sadness, hopelessness, emptiness in mood and a lack of interest or a total detachment from daily activities, It can be said that one is depressed, and depression can be so hazardous on the mental health that it affects how you think and how you relate with those around you

Causes and Factors

And just like any other mental disorder depression has its causes and vices that leads to

- [ ] Genetics: chances of getting depressed tends to be higher if the family has a long history of depression.

- [ ] Personality: Individuals with low self-esteem, who are easily overwhelmed by stress, appear to be more likely to experience depression.

- [ ] Biochemistry: Differences in certain chemicals in the brain may contribute to symptoms e.g insufficient serotonin transmission can lead to feeling of anxiety and sadness

- [ ] Environmental Factors: Continuous exposure to violence, neglect, abuse, or poverty may make some people more vulnerable to depression.

THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR /SYMPTOMS

Depression symptoms can vary in severity, frequency, and duration. Common symptoms include:

* Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood * Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism

Irritability

* Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness

* Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities

* Decreased energy or fatigue

* Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions

Depression can impact various aspects of life, including:

1. Personal Relationships: Strains relationships with family and friends.

2. Work and Productivity: Affects performance, attendance, and ability to work.

3. Physical Health: Linked to various physical health problems, such as heart disease, loss of appetite.

4. Quality of Life: Reduces overall well-being and life satisfaction which can ultimately lead to death

 PREVENTING AND COPING WITH DEPRESSION

1. Education: it’s very important and a major step to understand a problem in order to deal with it, so learning about depression gives one the capability and knowledge to tackle it.

2. Routine: Maintaining a regular schedule can help manage symptoms.

3. Self-care: Engaging in activities that promote well-being and relaxation.

4. Professional Help: Regular consultations with mental health professionals.

CONCLUSION

Additionally depression has its various forms like the

● Major Depressive Disorder (MDD): Severe symptoms that interfere with the ability to work, sleep, study, eat, and enjoy life. Episodes can occur once or repeatedly.

● Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD):Also known as dysthymia, it is a chronic form of depression with long-term symptoms (two years or longer) that may not be as severe as those of MDD.

● Bipolar Disorder : Includes episodes of depression as well as episodes of mania or hypomania.

● Psychotic Depression: Severe depression accompanied by some form of psychosis, such as delusions or hallucinations.

● Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Depression that occurs typically during the winter months when there is less natural sunlight.

● Postpartum Depression: Depression that occurs after giving birth, characterised by severe mood swings, exhaustion, and a sense of disconnection from the baby.
